More on the ice road

Some more pix from the weekend mainly by the truck and on the ice. Good thing I parked where I did as the work crews who were flooding the road were slowly but surely creeping up on my position. The temp was warm, for here, at -20 C, today Wednesday it’s -6 C having warmed up all night from -15 at midnight. It’s a sunny day today and certainly this warming trend is a bit of a meteorological anomaly; but no one is complaining. Next few days are supposed to be warm as well.

Well back to Caribou Hills, where face masks are still a necessity with the wind and lower temps. The road, where it is snow free is clear ice and looks to be approximately 60 to 70 cm thick, which correlates well with the NWT ice thickness calculator website listing 20,000 kg at 75 cm. The obviously empirical formula the government is using is the square root of (weight in pounds divided by 50), then converted to kg – hmmm.

The blue and white barge I’m pretty sure is the one that people can book passage on if you want to take the slow boat up from Hay River and down the Mackenzie to Inuvik and probably Tuk. Last pic is Reindeer Station in fading light.

The reason one needs to wear a mask on occasion...
