The plan was to go up to Tuk on Sunday as the weather was supposed to be good. The day started out sunny and bright, now that the sunrise is actually happening at the right time in the morning. As a got near the Bar C channel the wind had picked up significantly and a cloud bank was moving in fast from the North. There obviously was a good shear as the wind was from the south and the cloud cover was coming in from the north, consequently there were great conditions for a ground blizzard. I continued on but it became very evident that there was little point in going right up to Tuk as the point was to take some Pingo skiing pix with clear skies. So... here are some shots of worsening conditions with the road actually blowing in behind me. As well, with all the heavy hauling going on the road it is well cracked around the Bar C turn; while there is nothing really for scale the main crack in the pix is about 30 cm wide and about 40cm deep in places. So plan B was head back to Storm Hills and do some skiing there, as the cloud bank hadn’t quite reached it. Still very windy though.
The ground blizzard abated though it stayed windy, the snow was actually really good and the ridge provided a nice longer run with good turns. Once again mirages were in evidence – they appear more often than not, makes for virtual big cliffs and walls across the Delta. The last pic clearly shows game trails left by Caribou.
