Break up was a bit innocuous this year and was quick, as I mentioned. Lots of candle ice. The flows moved in rapidly and left in a mater of 24 hours or so. there was some debris on the ice but mnothing much as the banks didn't appear to be torn apart too much. Marine road flooded once again, this is normal but doesn't happen every year, high water this year.
Quick shot out by Shell Lake - part way to the Airport, this is the lake used by float planes. at one point the only way you could live here was to have the need to dock a float plane. Lots of old mooring's.
...And down by the Inuvik boat ramp, looking back at downtown, lol. The boat ramp is where all the action is generally, people go down to just sit and watch the comings and goings. These shots were 1 in the morning so things were a little quiet.
Inuvik, Place of Man, is currently the northern end of the Dempster Highway. It is a government town of an approximate population of 3200. It's been really muddy...

Some shots down by the Inuvik boat ramp during the Mackenzie River Break Up 2015
A little late but not that long ago. people were getting boats in while skidoos were still being used on the remaining ice. The old Elan and toboggan didn't have enough horsepower to hydroplane the gap so it was eventually rescued by getting loaded into a boat. Break up was quick this year, 2015, with the ice moving through in a matter of days once it passed Separation Point in the Delta - ie the place where the Delta actually starts and the Mackenzie River breaks into three distinct channels. Water levels got quite high and, though nothing not seen before, with most of the boat ramp parking submerging and the "old boats," (as the school kids call them - local hangout) actually having water lapping at their hulls. Lots of Candle Ice in places - more shots of such to follow. Sun is up all the time of course.

Evening pix down by the boat launch in Inuvik March 2014 - sun pillars and Husky Lakes
A couple of old commercial boats are high and dry near the boat launch. One has trees growing through the deck plates. good sunset with a hint of a sun pillar.
Also was over by Husky Lakes, to check trail conditions. Trail from Jimmy Lake to Husky lake was rough and the lake surface was really rough, lots of old overflow by the shore as well, which was a bit odd. A traveler coming over from Tuktoyaktuk actually broke his toboggan tow arm on the lake ice. The wind scoured out the dock by Husky Lake revealing it covered in spray ice from the fall - looks like a plastic sheet is covering it.
