Inuvik sun Festival 2015

The return of the sun festival was this weekend past and it was marked by a visit from Justin Trudeau. He was up for a personal visit which included a tour of the Aurora Research Institute. Nice guy, asked lots of good questions and his son got to play with robots.

Some sunrise pics from the bypass road above Inuvik after the pancake breakfast, ie about 11:30 / noon.

Quick pics from the snow carving event in Jim Koe Park, which is the space in front of the now demolished SAM School

Later that evening the annual Sunrise Festival bonfire and fireworks took place – as opposed to the impromptu fireworks that took place Friday night on the river and included lighting some of the mortars inside a truck then expeditiously placing them on the ice. Crowd was a bit smaller than usual and a little more subdued and is perhaps a sign of the times in Inuvik. Only a few tourists in town for the event, we came across a radio station contest winner and the DJ from Edmonton who awarded the prize they had their SOs with them, amounting to 4. Saw some people with Tourism NWT on their parkas but not sure whether they were tourists or not. No Global News crew this time as well.
