Was out to Whitehorse for a conference at the beginning of May; interesting town. Lots of bike trails around and by a cool little canyon comprised of basaltic rock. This apparently is also the town water supply though they have a float plane base and boat tours here.
We also took a trip out to Haines Junction for a soirĂ©e at the cultural centre there. Not much is happening in Haines Junction these days according to the guy at the gas station. Looks like some decent skiing / mountaineering / cragging options on the front ranges. Dry area that was very reminiscent of the terrain around Williams Lake, Chilcotin. We also stopped by the Champagne First Nations on the way back including the Canyon Creek Bridge – traditional hunting spot and legacy of the US Army Corps of Engineers.
Champagne First Nations is a mix of new and old; obviously people reside there but amongst the current are the remnants of the past and in some cases people are still using the old buildings. With the horses and the arid terrain it didn’t feel at all like the north, again more like the interior of BC.
