...well, and the weekend before to start. Out by the main cliff I cleaned up for climbing on. A small spring has developed under the bouldering area - lots of moss getting an early start on growing.
Best place to buy gas in town - cheap, ha. also the rock truck lined up in Inuvik for sprig break up
The spring weather has been 10 to 12 degrees above seasonal, which meant the bouldering area was a good place to spend some time. Not many places above the Arctic Circle that a person can boulder in shorts in May. This slam bluff has a great landing - moss and lichens, and is sheltered from the wind. sticky limestone and not much loose surface material. This is the first place I used for a bit of mixed back in the fall of last year. There is a bolt anchor and several drilled holes if a top rope is needed - trees too.
The water has started flowing and this creek which I was walking down the previous weekend is now fully clear of ice and in the first stages of flood. Things change quickly here. Shot on two separate nights , on mornings rather, after midnight, lol - long exposure shots of the creek, about 1:30 in the morning.
Out by the cliff and then down by the territorial park where there is an anomalous sand feature sticking out of the permafrost. Interesting hummock right near the road
I put up 2 actual rock routes in advance of the weekend and these, though short, proved entreating. Again this is probably the only sport crag above the Arctic Circle in Canada and perhaps North America - not sure about Alaska - and Baffin has real routes on real cliffs ha ha ha.
Top of a crag of low quality rock further back of the climbing area. I'm standing over a fracture that is developing as the entire front section slowly cleaves off.
Back in town, on Sunday - cooler day- checking out some of the ice that we had been driving over a short time ago.
The East Channel, the one that Inuvik is next to is still full of ice but the water is coming up and this dock is almost under water, the road will be next, as it submerges every year as well. also by the official start of the Inuvik Tuktoyaktuk highway - mud city
...and finally back on the plane for caterpillar
